Progress and Highlights
Year 1
Two seminars were run, one at the Institute of Development Studies , University of Sussex on 13 th and 14 th April 2007 and one at the Rutland Hotel Sheffield on 10 th and 11 th July 2007. Each seminar had a full programme of papers around a theme, and each included a group discussion around a pre-agreed theme for which members of the seminar prepared. These sessions on the film 24 square miles and Winifred Holtby's novel South Riding were ‘led' by a network member and enabled a wide ranging but focused discussion which drew on the different disciplinary perspectives of the seminar
Year 2
The third seminar was run at the Institute of Development Studies , University of Sussex in April 2008 and the fourth and final seminar was run at the Rutland Hotel, Sheffield in July 2008. These seminars have continued on the same structure a full programme of papers around a theme but in place of a group discussion of a specific text/series of images there were brainstorming sessions on how to take the work forwards. The themes have worked and it has been possible to draw together papers into conclusions.
