Aims and Objectives

The “sublime” and the “pastoral” are two of the most enduring ideas in the history and interpretation of landscape but how do these concepts relate to contemporary urban and industrial landscapes?

Progress and Highlights

The project initially consisted of three workshops:

Workshop 1: In search of the urban pastoral
Workshop 2: The cinematic sublime
Workshop 3: Anxious landscapes: spaces of abandonment and decay

The workshops were well attended and strongly interdisciplinary in their scope. A series of key concepts were subjected to rigorous analysis and debate.

In addition to the three workshops a further seminar on “Promethean landscapes” was held and two joint evening events with the Royal Academy took place. These were open to the public and were very well attended.
