Aims and Objectives

This is a collaborative project between Lancaster University and The Wordsworth Trust. It involves manuscript materials for two Wordsworth texts (early Prelude material and Home at Grasmere ) which are both about the importance of place to the writing of poetry. The project has put the manuscript materials online (http://collections.wordsworth.org.uk)and wants to open up an understanding of the relationship between actual physical place (today) and imagined, textual space in the content of the poem and the making of the manuscript.

Progress and Highlights

The major features of the research which are exciting and innovative include:

- the high quality of the interpretative material, functioning in relation to three audiences: specialist; non specialist and educational. The site presents interactive tasks and activities as well as spatial maps, background and full scholarly material about the manuscripts.

- the detailed level of thematic searches for the base text, including themes such as happiness; community; body and mind; repetition; spirituality; poetic form; place etc. with multiple sub-headings.

- the privileging of the manuscript materials with high-quality photographs alongside a transcribed text, thumbnails for ease of use, and highlighted line by line readings.

- the integration of the database with GIS technology allowing for a mapping of the movements of William and Dorothy Wordsworth and the integration of letters about places and people with visual representations of place.
