Network advisors: Dr Georgina Endfield and Dr Carol Morris (School of Geography, University of Nottingham)

Background

Following the success of the Cultural Spaces of Climate Researching Environmental Change network, a group of postgraduates and early career researchers involved in the workshop series formed a parallel network specifically for early career researchers, with the aim of offering a friendly and supportive environment to share ideas and research, advertise events of interest, and form research collaborations.

Aims and objectives

Practical aims

  • To create a supportive network for sharing, exploring, disseminating, and constructive feedback for early career researchers.
  • To encourage, develop and maintain international dialogue and collaboration
  • To foster conversations between established and early career researchers, and those beyond the academy.

Intellectual aims

  • Grappling with the intellectual plurality of researching cultural dimensions of climate.
  • Exploring the epistemological narratives of climate.
  • Collectively reflecting upon the public value and policy implications of our research.

Broad themes

  • Challenging established framings of climate and climate change.
  • Methodological and interdisciplinary approaches for climate research.
  • Contextualising climate at the local, regional and global scale

Events

A planning meeting of the network was held at the University of Nottingham on 8th June 2011 at which the group decided that it would aim to hold three events during the 2011-2012 acadmic year.

Launch event and workshop 1

Theme: 'Challenging established framings of climate and climate change'.

Date: 6th-7th October 2011

Location: Royal Geographical Society and Science Museum, London

Agenda: The workshop at the Royal Geographical Society included:

  • An open discussion focused on the theme, aided by images brought by participants from their own research
  • Opportunities for members of the network to present their research in relation to the theme
  • A reading group introduced and facilitated by Professor Mike Hulme (University of East Anglia)
  • At introduction to the 'Atmosphere' gallery at the Science Museum by Alex Johnson

On the 7th October the group visited the 'Atmosphere: Exploring Climate Science' gallery at the Science Museum, London, to explore some current framings of climate and climate change.

Please see the workshop report for more details.

The network are now working on organising sessions for the RGS-IBG Midterm Postgraduate Conference which will be held at the University of Nottingham in April 2012, and at the RGS-IBG Annual Conference at the University of Edinburgh in July 2012, as well as a further workshop at the University of East Anglia.
